After a tense 4-2 penalty shootout
victory over France in the championship match of the Qatar 2022 Global Cup on Sunday, Lionel Messi and his Argentina teammates are the new world champions.
Argentina appeared to be headed for an easy victory with goals from Messi from the penalty spot in the 23rd minute and another from Angel di Maria in the 36th minute of the first half.
In the second half, Kylian Mbappe flipped the tables by scoring two goals in as many minutes to draw Les Bleus even with Argentina.
After Nicolas Otamendi fouled Randal Kolo Muani in the area in the 80th minute, the first goal was scored through penalty. Mbappe stepped up to the spot and beat Emiliano Martinez with a shot.

A minute later, Mbappe scored again with another tremendous strike to force overtime. With an extra-time goal, Messi believed he had won it, but Mbappe was there to tie it up as he finished his hat trick.
Mbappe took the opening penalty kick in the ensuing penalty kicks, and he scored. Messi took the second kick for Argentina, and he also scored.
While Argentina’s Dybala scored, France’s Kingsley Coman missed his second attempt.
Tochuameni missed wide for France on the third attempt, while Parades scored for Argentina.

The fourth kick was taken by Kolo Muani, who scored, and Montiel added the game-winning goal to give them a 4-2 victory.
Argentina has won the World Cup three times, first in 1978 and then again in 1986.

Messi, who made a total of 26 appearances in the Global Cup, not only broke the record for most games played at the tournament but also prevented France from becoming the first world champions in 60 years to successfully defend their title.
